Will Houston prepare to seize Paolo Banchero?
The The Vegas streak transformed radically earlier this week In anticipation, Paolo Panchero could go to first place. With no clear overall pick, there are plenty of rumors swirling about what the Orlando Magic team will do when they’re on the clock later Thursday.
Jabari Smith still makes more sense for the magic in first place, and if the Houston Rockets are worried the Oklahoma City Thunder will take Banchero in second, they’ll have to take a step up.
The Rockets never showed their cards, but Banchero praised his time in Houston for working out while in the media and said he could see himself fitting in well with Galen Green and Kevin Porter Jr.
This could all be last minute smoke by Orlando to try to lure Houston into a deal and sweeten the deal if their number drops to three. – Kristen Beck
Jabbari Smith: I’d be surprised if I didn’t get 1st
NEW YORK – The No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft returns to the Orlando Magic. And at this point, it’s no secret who they plan to pick on Thursday night.
“I’d be surprised if I didn’t get first place,” Jabari Smith Jr., Auburn’s overall top pick, told Yahoo Sports. “It’s just my competitive nature mixed with my selflessness, my ability to shoot the ball, defend multiple positions and care about winning. I don’t care about stats. I feel like I can help any team right away. But I feel like I’m the first choice.” – Chris Haynes
Auburn coach, Bruce Pearl, confident Jabari Smith will finish first and ‘Orlando win’
NEW YORK – The day has finally come. If they keep the choice, All signs point to Magic picking Jabari Smith of Auburn with overall pick #1.
Smith, a 6-foot-11 forward, played one season at Auburn, and coach Bruce Pearl knows exactly what kind of player the Magic would have if they took him with the first pick.
“What makes him so ranked? For his size, he’s the best jumping jack I’ve seen in college in over 20 years,” Pearl told Yahoo Sports. “He’s ready, as ready, as ever, and he’s going to make Orlando win.” – Kristen Beck
Tarry Eason, who could be Scotty Barnes in this category, can “definitely see the comparisons in our games”
NEW YORK – This time last year, Tari Eason was in the middle of making a decision that would change the course of his career. After a disappointing new season in Cincinnati, averaging just 7.3 points and 5.9 rebounds in 18 minutes, Eason decided to enter the transfer gate and eventually landed at LSU.
At the time, Will Wade had only sent three players to the NBA draft (most notably Cam Thomas to the 27th-ranked Brooklyn Nets in 2021), but Eason loved the freedom that offense offered and the idea of playing in a new conference.
“There was a learning curve and it was a new team, a new season, a new league and I was adjusting to everything.” Tell Eason Yahoo Sports. “Through that, I felt more comfortable in the game and that’s when things started to open up.” – Kristen Beck
Galen Williams gets lottery fanfare
The 6-foot-7 young Santa Clara climbed onto the drawing boards after his strong showing in the NBA draft and cemented himself as a first-round pick. After working with a handful of teams, Williams’ stock has continued to climb into the draft and there are belated signs that Williams might sneak into the lottery, anywhere from No. 8 (New Orleans Pelicans) to No. 19 (Minnesota Timberwolves).
“This process was just a blessing,” Williams told Yahoo Sports. “I’m from a smaller school, but basketball is basketball and I feel like I can compete at the highest level, and I’m just ready to work with any team that chooses me.” – Kristen Beck
#1 Expected Jabari Smith stress-free pick 24 hours before the draw
Yahoo Sports met Smith at the project’s host hotel and Smith was calm and relaxed 24 hours a day heading into the draft.
“I’m feeling good and ready for tomorrow,” Smith told Yahoo Sports. “I may not sleep tonight, but that’s just because I’m excited for tomorrow.” – Kristen Beck
Report: Pistons trade Grammy Grant to Trail Blazers in first round
Detroit Pistons Replaced 28-year-old winger Jerome Grant for the Portland Trail Blazers to pick a protected first-round draft pick from the top four in 2025 of the Milwaukee Bucks, According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
In the deal, Portland and Detroit are said to exchange picks 36 and 46 in the second round of the NBA draft on Thursday. The Blazers will bring the Pistons back in the 2025 second round to Detroit. Portland also dealt with the Pistons as the most favored in their second round and the New Orleans Pelicans in 2026.
Grant averaged 19.2 points (in 43/36/84 split shots), 4.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 31.9 minutes over 47 games for the Pistons last season. He was a fixture on the Denver Nuggets during their run to the 2020 Eastern Conference Finals before pursuing more playmaking responsibility in free agency. The Pistons gave him a three-year contract worth $60 million and higher usage in 2020, and he emerged as a marginal All-Star candidate. With it being a primary option, Detroit has won 43 games over the past two seasons.
Grant is another winger in a long line of options that the Blazers have tried to match to six-time All-Star guard Damian Lillard, and he might be the best of a bunch that included Norman Powell, Robert Covington and Gary Trent Jr. , Trevor Ariza, Rodney Hood, Moe Harkless and Al Farouk Aminu, among others.

Las Vegas turns a corner on Paulo Banchero’s No. 1 odds
In the past 24 hours, Banchero . odds have been Draft #1 overall on BetMGM went from +900 to +200 (Chit Holmgren is now +225). That’s enough to swing to believe the Orlando Magic is considering a Banchero with the #1 pick (many say it’s a two-way race between Jabari Smith and Chet Holmgren).
Banchero is the most physically prepared out of the top three with his 6-foot-10, 250-pound frame. When Holmgren and Panchero competed head-to-head last November, Panchero appeared to be the better player as he scored 21 points, five rebounds and two assists in 30 minutes. One scout or executive from every NBA team in the building would watch Banchero excel in the transition as the primary handler of the ball and go from toe to toe defensively with Holmgren.
This Vegas swing may be an indication that Banchero had an excellent workout in Orlando, Holmgren playing lightly and not mentioning who he was working for or how those drills went.
