Investigating whether Russia sought to influence the 2016 election (she did) and whether she colluded with the Trump campaign to do so, the former president regularly described her asThe greatest witch hunt in American history. “

The real story, according to Trump, was how the counterintelligence investigation in Russia began—a story that special counsel John Durham would have gotten to the bottom of the matter.

In the heart of what Trump called “crime of the centuryDurham’s claim was that Clinton campaign attorney Michael Sussman lied to the FBI about his own interests in passing information on Trump and Russia.
Former President Donald Trump speaks during the American Freedom Tour at the Austin Convention Center on May 14, 2022, in Austin, Texas.
Tuesday, Sussman has been found not guilty of perjury by a federal jury. As CNN wrote:

“The verdict is a major defeat for Durham and the Department of Justice prosecutors, who have spent three years looking for irregularities in the Trump and Russia investigation.”

It remains to be seen when Durham will conclude his investigation and whether he will press charges against anyone else.

What is clear, however, is that Sussman’s allegations, which have been by far the most well-known outcome of the Durham investigation to date, amount to significant swing and failure on the part of the special counsel.

the pointIt has always been difficult to line up Trump’s wild claims about the seriousness of the Durham investigation with its results. This disparity has never been more pronounced than it is today.
