BAFTA TV Awards viewers were left cringing on Sunday night as they watched an awkward exchange between Michelle Keegan and Tom Daley on stage at London‘s Royal Festival Hall.
The actress, 34, and the Olympic diver, 27, took to the stage to present an award at the glitzy event, where they proceeded to engage in a light-hearted chat in which Michelle questioned why Tom wasn’t wearing any of his knitted creations.
The pair’s attempt at humour unfortunately fell flat as it failed to raise a laugh, while fans at home shared their thoughts on Twitter, with one comparing the blunder to a ‘lead balloon.’

Michelle looked sensational on the night, gliding across the stage in a shimmering pale pink gown, while Tom turned heads in a quirky white co-ord with asymmetrical blue-and-yellow paintbrush prints.
But while their fashion senses were up to scratch, their humour fell short, as Michelle kicked things off by asking why Tom – who is an avid knitter and has launched his own collection of craft kits – wasn’t wearing any of his own handmade items.
Responding to Michelle disappointment, Tom quipped: ‘Well how do you know I’ve not got my knit knickers on?’ as he tugged at his trousers.
To which Michelle replied: ‘Aah OK, there we go! So we now know.’

The sportsman then told her: ‘I can teach you yo make some for yourself if you like?’, with Michelle then adding: ‘OK, Tom!’ as she fanned herself with the gold envelope.
Their exchange failed to raise any laughs and was met with silence from the audience, with Tom swiftly moving on to present the award.
The awkward moment didn’t go unnoticed by those watching at home, with some throwing shade at their exchange.
‘Oooh nobody laughed at Tom Daley’s joke to Michelle Keegan. Cringe’ commented one.
While another shared: ‘michelle keegan and tom daley? dishwater meets the end of the loaf, bland and bland!’

The awards recognise and celebrate the very best in television craft and television programmes broadcast in the UK in 2021 and are back to having a full live audience after the pandemic.

It was a great night for Ant and Dec as they picked up the Best Entertainment Show gong for Saturday Night Takeaway.
Ant and Dec said in their acceptance speech: ‘Thanks so much, what a great start to the night, we were convinced we wouldn’t get it this year so this is wonderful.
‘This is a lovely cherry on the cake. When we first started we were just in an empty studio and walking around thinking ‘is this any good?’
‘We have to thanks the fantastic production team so a round of applause for all of you too!’
Elsewhere in the two main categories Sean Bean – who wasn’t there to collect the award – won Leading Actor for his role in Time, while the Leading Actress award went to Jodie Comer for her role in the pandemic drama Help.

Earlier in the night Cathy Tyson picked up the gong for Supporting Actress for her role in Help where she starred alongside Jodie and Stephen.
Meanwhile, prison drama Time won in the Mini Series category – with Stephen Graham saying in his speech: ‘It was an absolute honour to get to act with my wife Hannah Walters’.
Jamie Demetriou won the Bafta in the Male In A Comedy category for Stath Lets Flats, beating off stiff competition from the likes of Ncuti Gatwa and Steve Coogan.

Other awards included Motherland winning in the Scripted Comedy category, Uprising winning in the Factual Series category and Big Zuu’s Big Eats winning in the Features category.
Accepting his award Big Zuu joked: ‘Representation matters. There will be young people watching this thinking if these waste-men can win a BAFTA! Jokes aside we did this for working class people.’
Elsewhere The Latish Show which stars Mo Gilligan won in the Comedy Entertainment Programme category and the comedian gave an emotional speech afterwards.

Succession star Matthew Macfadyen – who wasn’t there to collect his award – scooped the Supporting Actor gong, beating the likes of Stephen Graham in Help.
In the Reality and Constructed factual category Gogglebox won while Virgin Media’s Must See Moment award went to Rose Ayling-Ellis & Giovanni Pernice for their silent Strictly dance.
While in an unexpected turn of events Channel 4 series It’s A Sin – which had a whopping 11 nominations – won no awards on the night.
