Dave Chappelle revealed Thursday night during a show in Los Angeles why a man ran on stage earlier in the week and attacked the comedian.
Chappelle explained a show at The Comedy Store two nights after the attack, In The Hollywood ReporterHow he persuaded security to let him speak with attacker Isaiah Lee, 23.
“I needed to talk to him,” Chappelle said.
“He asked Lee what might have been the cause of his attack, which gave Lee—whom Chappelle told him he looked mentally ill—a story about his grandmother from Brooklyn, who had been forced to leave her neighborhood due to gentrification. Chappelle recounted that the attack was intended to draw attention to her plight.” .
Chris Rock, who was on the show Tuesday during the attack, was present on the Thursday show as well.
“At least I was slapped by a reputable person!” Chappelle joked to rock. “A homeless man slapped me with papers in his hair.”
Rock replied, “I was shocked by the softest n – which is rapping ever.”
Chappelle’s representative described the attack as “disturbing” earlier this week.

“As unfortunate and disturbing as the accident was, Chappelle continued the show,” Carla Sims, Chappelle’s actress, said. He said in a statement to CNN. “Jamie Foxx and Chris Rock helped calm audiences with their good sense of humor before Chappelle performed his last song and featured musical guests of the evening.”
Lee was carrying a replica of a pistol with a large, folded blade that resembled a pocket knife.
Security guards overpowered the attacker, and Chappelle continued to perform while the man was carried away in an ambulance.
Officer Alba Mendes, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department, said Lee, 23, has been arrested and detained for assault with a deadly weapon.
