Here’s what the 911’s voice reveals about Vicki White’s last moments before she was captured — and the questions they raise

The audio reveals a frantic scene inside the couple’s getaway car as they ran away, but it also offers little clarity about Vicki White being shot in the head before officers could pull her out of the car. She died of her injuries in hospital later that day.

The US Marshals Service said the chase ended when authorities forced the car Casey White was driving to smash into a ditch. Authorities tentatively believe Vicki White shot herself in the head when the car crashed, but no official cause of death has been announced.

In the 911 audio released by officials in Evansville, Indiana, Wednesday, the caller does not appear to be addressing the dispatcher, who says, “911” and “hello” apparently without being answered.

Instead, a woman – which authorities say is Vicki White’s – is heard saying things including, “Wait, stop…the airbags are exploding and killing us.”

Soon you hear a loud noise – the first of at least four loud noises occurs in about 15 seconds. It is not clear in every case what the sounds represent, and it is not clear from the sound when the car crashed, when it overturned, and when a gun was fired.

“God,” says the woman after the first noise. “The airbags are exploding. Let’s get out and run.” Hotel mentioned.

The second noise was heard and the woman screamed. At least two more sounds come, followed by another shriek. A siren can be heard and a little more than a minute later, someone says repeatedly “she’s got a gun in her hand” and “she’s breathing”.

The line remains open as officers work to get the pair out of the car.

How was the shot of Vicki White?

It is unclear from the 911 voice how Vicki White was shot and the coroner’s report has not yet been released.

In an audio transmission from Evansville Police, the dispatcher can be heard advising law enforcement units that “we can hear her on the line saying she put her finger on the trigger.”

The 911 recording does not appear to reveal Vicki White mentioning a pistol or her finger on the trigger. However, other people in the recording – apparently responding officers – can be heard saying that her finger was on the trigger when they found her.

When officers pulled Casey White out of the car and took him into custody, he was said to have asked them to help his “wife” who had shot her in the head and insisted he had not, according to U.S. Marshal Marty Kelly, who said to their knowledge, the husband was not married. The authorities said earlier that the officer and the inmate were not related.

If Vicki White shot herself, it is not yet clear whether she did it on purpose or if she accidentally fired the gun in the chaos of the chase.
