Jennifer Gray tells how former Matthew Broderick’s car accident was one of her biggest ‘traumas’

Jennifer Gray looks back at her devastating car accident with Matthew Broderick in a new interview ET Thursday joint.

The 62-year-old Dirty Dancing star spoke about the collision that occurred on August 5, 1987 in northern Irelandwhile promoting her new book Out Of The Corner: A Memoir.

“The car accident in Ireland was, I would say, one of the three most important traumas of my life, and perhaps the lead,” the actress said, acknowledging that it still haunts her to this day.

Bad days: Jennifer Gray called Matthew Broderick’s 1987 car crash – which killed two women in Northern Ireland – “the three most important traumas of my life” in an ET interview from Thursday; They were seen together in 1987

“It’s very hard to describe a time when you are going through a near-death experience and being present when other people are dying,” Jennifer continues. “Being alone on a country road in the middle of nowhere with no one else around or conscious was very terrifying…it led to many other things in my life.”

She and Matthew were vacationing in Northern Ireland after they started a secret relationship while filming their popular comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, which was released in 1986.

Matthew was behind the wheel of the BMW they rented when he crossed the midfield and crashed into a car driven by Margaret Doherty, 63, and her daughter Anna Gallagher, 28.

Both women were killed instantly in the accident, and Matthew was left unconscious with severe injuries.

Jennifer found the accident particularly distressing, as she was the only person left alive and conscious after the wreck while alone on the road.

I was the only surviving witness, because Matthew survived, but he was unconscious and had amnesia and was badly injured. I thought he was dead,” she said, with emotion rising in her voice. I didn’t even know that there were two women who were tragically killed at that time. It’s just something you don’t get back from in the same way.

The breakup had haunted Broderick for years, and some fans spread rumors about the cause, but Gray claimed there was nothing sinister about the events leading up to the breakup.

“I didn’t have any information that people seemed to think I did because they wanted an answer and there was no answer because it was an accident,” she said. ‘And [Matthew] He was a great driver, nobody was drinking. It was just an accident. And it was tragic, and I think about family in Ireland all the time.

After her brief romance with Broderick, Gray rebounded with another relationship with Johnny Depp.

Moving On: After her brief romance with Broderick, Gray rebounded with another relationship with Johnny Depp, though she accused him of being “jealous and paranoid” in her memoirs; Seen in 1989

We were young… For me, this guy was the answer to my problems. This guy was kind, loving, romantic, crazy about me, and beautiful. I was in desperate need of a bounce back to something that looked and felt like 1989’s Johnny Depp. Believe me, it was a pretty soft landing. was necessary. I was bleeding from the inside and this guy saved me and made me…not feel what I was feeling.

But Jennifer also accused her former love of being “crazy and terrified of jealousy” in her memoirs.

“All I can say about this trial is that it breaks my heart for everyone involved,” Gray said of Depp’s ongoing defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard. I think it’s sad and I hope it will be resolved and I just wish everyone well.
