Police said the suspect is in custody after being shot multiple times in a Buffalo supermarket

Buffalo police have responded to the scene of a “multiple active shooting event” at the Tops Markets on Jefferson Street in the city, according to a tweet from Mark Polonkars, Erie County Executive.

Authorities have yet to announce how many people have been affected by what police described as the mass shooting.

Police said the shooting took place at Tops Markets on Jefferson Street.

“BPD is at the site of a mass shooting on tops of the 1200s of Jefferson Street,” the Buffalo Police Department wrote on Twitter. “Police say several people have been shot. The shooter is under arrest. Motorists and residents are urged to avoid the area.”

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office expressed its condolences in a tweet on Twitter following the incident, adding that Sheriff John Garcia had “ordered all resources and personnel available to assist” the police.

New York Governor Cathy Hochhol tweeted, “I am closely monitoring the shooting in a Buffalo grocery store. We have offered assistance to local officials. If you are in Buffalo, please avoid the area and follow the directions of law enforcement and local officials.”

This is an evolving story.
